Sgt Vussi Marenene’s story is one of resilience, identity, and an unbreakable commitment to the sport he loves.

After joining the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 2004, Vussi became part of the SAPS Road and Mountain Bike family in 2014. From the start, his talent was undeniable, earning him multiple wins in police cycling events and the respect of those around him.

In 2022, everything changed. While out training, Vussi was struck off his bike in a devastating accident that left him a quadriplegic. For many, that moment could have marked the end of their athletic journey—but not for Vussi.

Instead of giving up, he chose to adapt.

Vussi transitioned to handcycling, bringing the same drive and discipline that once defined his racing career. Step by step, he rebuilt—not just his strength, but his place in the sport.

That perseverance paid off. Vussi won his category at the Outeniqua Chair Challenge, proving that resilience can redefine what’s possible.
