In 2023 a wonderful Bay Area non-profit that a friend of mine founded and runs – Inclusive Cycling International (ICI) – helped the Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) launch an adaptive cycling program. Botswana has been remarkably successful at sustaining this project independently for three years and creating numerous opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in local and even international events.
With the support Bidii Yetu, another 501(c)(3) non-profit that promotes disability-inclusive cycling in Africa, the Botswana Council for the Disabled has organized a 1000km fundraising and awareness raising handcycle and bike ride across Botswana to expand and support their programs. Bidii Yetu is promoting this ride as a proof of concept for future rides to be organized in other countries across Africa to help build capacity for locally funded, locally supported sustainable programs.
